Our Story

Hornet Knitting Mills’ story begins at 4 Kirsten Street, where a single circular knitting machine quietly set the foundation for a future woven with ambition and skill. In those early days, they focused on producing lining for seat covers, but with deep roots in the sock manufacturing trade, the founders soon added two sock machines. What started as a modest setup quickly grew into a dynamic textile business, partnering with major knitting mills across South Africa as a commission knitter. As their reputation for quality and reliability grew, so did their ambitions, leading them to venture into nylon fabric production.

The circular plant expanded to house 20 machines, producing a diverse range of fabrics. From the smooth feel of single jersey to the sturdy warmth of fleece, each fabric is meticulously crafted to meet the highest standards. With fabric weights varying from 120 m² to 280 Gen² and specialty materials like Lacoste, Trilobal, nylon ribbing, Hornets became synonymous with versatility and quality. Their contribution to the local textile industry was recognized on 19 July 1988, when they proudly joined the Tygerberg Chamber of Commerce and Industrial Association. Today, every knitted collar, every cuff for a golf shirt or tracksuit, carries the legacy of a family business built on precision, innovation, and excellence — a thread that continues to run through the fabric of the South African textile industry
